Elevating a Standby Generator Above Storm Surge on the Coast

A generator below the surge line is a sacrifice to the first strong storm. Eighteen inches of correct elevation, and a transfer switch above the waterline, is the cheapest reliability upgrade on the Coast.
The failure that happens before the outage
Storm surge on the Coast arrives before the worst of the wind and recedes before the power comes back. A generator that sat in two feet of salt water during the surge is a generator that will not start when the restoration week begins. The engine, the controller, and the alternator all sit low in the enclosure; salt water in any of them is a total loss.
The fix is elevation designed to the lot, not to a guess. Harrison County flood maps put base flood elevation on every parcel south of the interstate, and the right generator pad height follows from that number plus freeboard.
Reading the flood zone for the lot
Zone VE is the coastal high-hazard band along the beach where wave action is expected; equipment there goes on a platform tied to the structure's pilings. Zone X is outside the mapped floodplain, where a standard grade-level pad is acceptable.

Pads, platforms, and what holds them down
A raised pad is a poured or precast slab on a compacted, stepped base, tall enough to clear the design elevation. Above roughly three feet, a platform becomes more practical: a treated or aluminum frame anchored to footings or tied into the house's pilings, with the generator on a vibration-isolated mount.
Wind matters as much as water. A standby enclosure is a sail, and Coast installs are anchored for hurricane wind loads with through-bolted hardware rated for salt exposure. Whole-home standby installation on the Coast treats anchoring as standard scope, not an add-on.
The transfer switch has to be above the water too
An elevated generator wired to a transfer switch at grade in the garage is only half protected. The automatic transfer switch and its controls should sit above the same design elevation, which in many Coast homes means mounting it higher on the wall or relocating it to the elevated floor.
The same logic applies to the fuel side. Regulators and propane tanks in the surge zone need anchoring; natural gas meters are set by the utility and are generally at grade, which is acceptable because the meter is designed to be wetted.
Noise, setbacks, and neighbors on a raised install
Raising a generator raises its sound source. The standard setbacks still apply: five feet from any operable window, door, or vent, and eighteen inches from the wall for listed units, with the exhaust pointed away from the house and the neighbor's bedroom. On tight beach lots that sometimes decides the side of the house before the flood zone does.
