The short answer for a Gulfport home

A single-story Coast home with one central air system, a gas or electric range, and normal refrigeration usually needs a standby in the 18 to 22 kilowatt range. Two air handlers, a well pump, or an electric water heater push that toward 24 to 26 kilowatts. The reason square footage fails is that the air conditioner dominates everything. In a September outage, central air is half or more of the total electrical load, and it draws several times its running current for a fraction of a second every time the compressor starts.

That matters for fuel as much as for purchase price. A generator working at 60 to 70 percent of capacity burns less fuel per useful watt than one loafing at 25 percent, and on a propane tank every gallon is a fraction of a day.

  • Managed loads: central air compressors, electric water heaters, electric dryers, ranges, well pumps, pool pumps, EV chargers.
  • Always-on loads: refrigeration, lighting, sump and lift pumps, medical equipment, network and phone charging.
  • Never on a generator: pool pumps and hot tubs during an outage. They are the fastest way to turn a week of fuel into three days.

What a load assessment actually measures

A proper assessment walks the panel breaker by breaker, records nameplate data off the condenser and water heater, checks whether the range and dryer are gas or electric, and notes anything unusual like a workshop subpanel or a second refrigerator in the garage. From that comes a running load, a start-up load, and a recommendation that fits both.

It also settles the transfer question: a whole-house automatic transfer switch versus a managed-circuit panel. On the Coast, whole-house with load management is the common answer, because nobody wants to choose which rooms get power on day four.

Oversizing is not the safe choice

Buying two sizes up feels like insurance, but a generator that runs lightly loaded for days wet-stacks, burns more fuel per watt, and costs more at purchase and every service. The safe choice is the size that matches the managed load with a modest margin.
